A unique aspect of Taiwanese buildings is that they are often built with the second (and higher) floor extending out over the sidewalk. These covered sidewalks, or "arcades", serve to protect pedestrians from Taiwan's harsh weather. Whether it's pouring rain or blazing hot, they provide refuge for people who want to avoid the elements while going from one place to another. In this low-intermediate piece, our contributor, 何姵萱, introduces us to this aspect of Taiwan's architecture.

〈騎樓〉
如果你來台灣，走在路上的時候可能會發現一種特別的建築：「騎樓」。
在台灣常常可以看到騎樓這種建築，這是因為天氣的關係。台灣常常下雨，如果忘了帶傘，或是下雨下得太大，街上的人就可以暫時去騎樓下「躲雨」，讓衣服、鞋子不會被雨弄濕。
騎樓可以躲雨，如果太陽很大、天氣很熱，人們也可以走騎樓，不需要一直曬太陽。而且，因為騎樓不能騎摩托車（機車）或是開車，所以人們走在騎樓也會比較安全。
很多臺灣人都喜歡騎樓這種建築，也很習慣有騎樓。不論是晴天或是下雨天，騎樓都是一個方便又安全的地方，大家都可以用。
雖然騎樓很方便，但是有一些事情不能在騎樓做。例如，人們不能在騎樓賣東西，也不能騎車、開車，因為這些事情會讓其他人沒辦法用騎樓。如果在騎樓做這些事情，其他人就必須走到騎樓外面的路上，容易發生車禍。所以，用騎樓的時候要小心，不要讓別人不方便！
